Zero Waste Campus Goal: UIC will divert 90% of landfill-bound material through techniques such as source reduction, materials reuse, recycling, and composting.
The Green Team in this building received the prestigious Practice Greenhealth Emerald Award for promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship by increasing the recycling rate, decreasing food waste, and engaging and educating staff. If you purchase a drink in the cafeteria in this building, you will not see any plastic containers or plastic straws! They also participate in the Food Recovery Network program, which captures the surplus of perishable food from the kitchen and donates it to the Franciscan House, the second largest homeless shelter in Chicago.
