Arbor Day Observance
In order to maintain its Tree Campus USA status (and also because its fun!) UIC holds yearly observance during Earth Month commemorating Arbor Day. Click here to learn about our Service Learning Projects.
Healthy Trees, Healthy U: This Arbor Day, UIC hosted local high school students on April 24, 2015. We learned all about the health benefits of trees from Cherie LeBlanc Fisher of the United States Forest Service, and took real-world data measurements to update our Campus Tree Care Plan.
We also participated in the World Wildlife Fund’s social media campaign: #hugatree, posting fun photos of ourselves hugging trees to show support for protecting the world’s forests. See more pictures on social media!
College of Dentistry Tree Planting & Tree Tagging, April 22, 2014. The College of Dentistry took part in the UIC Campus Tree Initiative by “tagging,” or adopting trees surrounding the building. The pinnacle of various Earth Month celebrations, various departments took ownership of trees surrounding the college and placards hang on the tree signifying the trees adoptive owners. Additionally, the a College of Dentistry planted a A White Oak, a cousin to a tree used in compounds implemented during root canals, in front of the college.
Hospital Prairie Garden Clean-up April 26, 2013. We got the Prairie Garden ready for Spring. The Office of Sustainability provided gloves and tools, and volunteers were warned to be prepared to get a little dirty and some fresh air! One tree that was planted was the Pagoda Dogwood which was planted in honor of 41 children cared for at the Children’s Hospital at the University of Illinois. See more picture on our Facebook page.

This year’s tree planting event was held at the Northwest corner of the Daley Library to celebrate all the work UIC has done to manage trees on campus while giving students an opportunity to improve the natural landscape of UIC. The Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota donated 38 trees to be planted for this event, along with t-shirts and lunch for all volunteers. Species planted included Bur Oak, Accolade Elm, Black Hills Spruce and Cornelian Cherry Dogwood. Close to 80 volunteers participated! See more photos on our Facebook page and the UIC News article.

On the 41st Earth Day, one of the Arbor Day trees was planted, a service berry, to provide service and shade, to sequester carbon dioxide and to give sustenance and in memory of Wangari Mathai and her ability to see and manifest the connection of human fate with the viability of the planet and peace. The event was attended by visiting Nobel Laureates.
