UIC Bike 2 Campus Week

October 9 – 16, 2015

Congratulations UIC on another successful Bike 2 Campus Week! Bike2Campus is part challenge, part competition. We wanted to get as many students, faculty, and staff riding as many bikes as possible. We competed against 10 other Chicagoland colleges and universities in the Fall. Even though we did not win overall, UIC ended “runner-up” with 1155 recorded rides between October 9-16, 2015! UIC had over 100 participants that rode their bikes, took a safety quiz, or posted a pic to Instagram!

Congratulations to UIC winners!

Here’s how you helped UIC win runner-up!

  • How can I participate?

    1) RIDE

Ride your bike from home to UIC, or ride your bike around UIC, or just ride your bike around town. Either way, RIDE YOUR BIKE! Throughout the week, UIC will host safe, fun and engaging bicycle events around campus to help you get on that bike.

    2) RECORD

Let us know how much you rode. Go to bike2campus.com and select UIC, provide your contact information, and enter in the number of rides each day. (A “ride” can be from Rogers Park to UIC, or maybe just from SCE to SCW. We want to know how many times you got on that bike!)

    3) REWARD

There are 4 ways to earn perks:

    1. pedal. Ride your bike anytime anywhere October 9-16, 2015 and log it at www.bike2campus.com. You will be eligible to win a 1 year DIVVY membership, a Bern helmet, or Abus U-lock if you are one of three top riders! The distance of your trip does not matter, just the number of trips. (Did you ride to UIC, but stopped at a coffee shop along the way? Well, sir, that’s 2 trips!)
    2. pass the Illinois Bicycle Safety Quiz @ bikesafetyquiz.com.
A contest for everyone- whether you ride a bike this week or not! We want our streets safer for all, so we want errbody to take the quiz! Random winners who email their certificate of completion at the gold level to ChiBike2Campus@gmail.com will receive a pair of tickets to a show at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra!
    3. post your experience or photo publicly on Instagram using #ChiBike2Campus and win a sweet Working Bikes prize pack including a Pint Glass, Koozy, and more!
    4. pedal some more. You can also win prizes like a Trader Joe’s gift basket or tickets to a show at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by simply logging in at least one ride! We will pick multiple random winners!

UIC is running special contest! To reward the one who pedals their butt off, we are giving away a UIC Men’s basketball prize pack- worth $108! 4 lower-level seats tickets to a 2015-2016 home game with 4 food vouchers! Simply enter the total miles you rode between October 9 – October 16, 2015!

  • Bike2Campus Week Events at UIC

Join the Office of Sustainability everyday beginning Monday, October 12-16 for a sponsored bike ride around campus and the surrounding areas! You will need the following: a bike, a helmet, and a great attitude! (Ok, that last one was cheesy, but we are SO excited, we can’t contain it!)

Rec 2 Rec Ride.  We will meet at SRF on the east side at noon and meander our way down to the new Outdoor Field Complex and then over to the west side’s SFC. We will make a final stop at the College of Pharmacy for anyone that needs to register their bike with the UIC Police. There’s DIVVY stations near both Campus Rec facilities! See details here. Total miles: 3

Shedd Aquarium Ride. Did you know Chicago’s museum campus is only 2 miles from UIC’s east campus? The Shedd Aquarium is offering FREE general Admission on certain dates in 2015 for Illinois Residents! We will leave from James Stukel Towers Residence Hall and ride to the Shedd. Feel free to stay and hangout or head on back! See details here. Total miles (round trip) 4.

    16th St Mural Viewing Ride.
We will meet at the DIVVY station at Taylor & Wood (across from the Hospital) and we will ride south to 16th street in Pilsen. We will ride east and marvel in the beauty of the murals! The ride will be 30-40 minutes. See details here. Total miles: 4

Seeds – Soil – Suds Ride. We will ride our bikes to Big Delicious Planet, “greenest caterer in America”.  After the screening of the film, “Open Sesame, the Story of Seeds”, we will take a 15 minute ride to BDP. Don’t own a bike? Not to worry- we will depart from the DIVVY station at 900 W Harrison and ride to the station at Grand and Wood. From there, it’s only a 5 minute walk to Big Delicious Planet. Don’t have a DIVVY membership? That’s ok too, because the first 2 people to RSVP to lsanze1@uic.edu will get free 24-hour pass!

They will give us a tour of their urban farm at 5pm and talk to us how they’re organically growing 85 varieties of vegetables, herbs, fruits and edible flowers in 50 raised beds and how in 2013 they harvested almost 4,000 pounds of organically grown vegetables and herbs.

After the tour, for anyone 21+ that would like to wet their whistle, Goose Island will talk to us about their sustainability program as we sip Green Lines! Only a 5 minute walk to the newly-opened taproom!

Watch the movie. Discuss the movie. Ride to Big Delicious Garden for a tour of an actual urban farm. Drink sustainable beers at Goose Island. See details here. Total Miles: 2.5

College of Cycling Volunteer Ride. Join the student organization College of Cycling on their monthly volunteer bike ride to thePacific Mission Garden and help unused food from the UIC dining hall to the homeless shelter. Meet in front of the cafeteria of SCE and then ride as a group to the shelter that is less than 2 miles away at 1458 S. Canal St. You will help make UIC more sustainable by diverting wasted food. Contact the College of Cycling at collegeofcyclinguic@gmail.comif you would like to join. They will even have bike carts and bikes for you! See all the great things the College of Cycling is up to!
