Thinking about installing solar on your home but don’t know where to start or think it is too expensive? Solar Chicago is here to help.
Solar Chicago is a residential solar group program being undertaken by the City of Chicago (City), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Vote Solar, a non-profit organization working to bring solar energy into the mainstream.
The City was recently designated the Earth Hour Capital of the United States by WWF for its sustainability efforts, including its focus on lowering costs for residential solar systems.
Launching June 2014, Solar Chicago will continue these efforts to help expand the local solar market by making solar easy and more affordable than ever for homeowners in the Chicago metro area.
- A Request for Proposals will be issued to the solar contractor community the week of May 12th. Once proposals are received (early June), a volunteer evaluation committee will review and score the proposals, selecting one or more installers for the program.
- Once an Installer(s) has been selected (early June), the Solar Chicago program will provide them with your contact information. The Installer will then contact you to schedule a no cost / no obligation site evaluation and provide you with a proposal specific to your home.
- The selected contractor(s) will need 12 months of detailed electricity usage data to accurately size a system for your home’s energy needs. Please begin to gather this helpful information to expedite your proposal.
Note: We hope to make solar available to both single family and multi-family homeowners through Solar Chicago. Until the selection process is complete, however, we do not know the specific range of services solar contractors will offer program participants. We will continue to keep you updated as we learn more.
What is Solar Chicago?
Solar Chicago pools the purchasing power of the community to make solar more affordable. More participants means a better deal for you and more clean, reliable solar power for the Chicago metro area. Please help us spread the word about Solar Chicago to your co-workers, friends, family and neighbors! Should you have any questions, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Will solar work on my home?
The two biggest factors are the amount of sunlight you get throughout the day and the amount of open roof space. The selected Installer(s) will provide you with an assessment by looking at satellite photos of your property to determine if your home is good for solar. It is that simple! If your roof looks good, the selected Installer with schedule a no cost / obligation solar consultation to evaluate if a solar power system will fit with your home’s architecture and meet your energy needs.
