Facility designers focus rightfully on sustainability. However, sustainability actually occurs in operation, when the building is in the hands of the scientific organization and the building operators. This program will explore the ways users in many different roles affect performance of the facility. It will challenge the designers to explicitly consider interactions of people and buildings and to shape those interactions for a positive result.

Additionally, it will address many aspects of purchasing, acquisition, disposal, use and re-use that are part of daily function and can be improved by engaging various members of the lab community. The program will help designers, contractors, vendors, and others. to put their work in context when they learn the goals and efforts of the users.
