New sectors of jobs are emerging in the green industry. The green industry encompasses companies whose products or services focus on improving the environment. This would include industries such as wind power, solar energy, lithium ion batteries, electric engines and many more. Initially, the focus of these companies was to develop, produce and implement new technology. The affect on worker safety and health is not generally the first concern as new products or processes are being developed in any field. However, strategies must be implemented to identify, analyze and interpret the safety and health hazards in the green industry. Specific safety and health programs can then be developed for these industries by utilizing best practices from other industries and developing new strategies customized for their business. The goal of this symposium is to provide attendees with a basic understanding of the safety and health hazards associated these industries and provide strategies for identifying and addressing the risks associated with jobs in the green industry so that worker health and safety is an important part of green businesses. The symposium will conclude with a review of OSHA initiatives and enforcement related to sustainability industries and a panel discussion including participant questions and comments.
