Since 2008, the Office of Sustainability at UIC has presented a diverse array of fun and educational events during our Earth Month celebration. Scheduled every year during the month of April these activities provide outreach to our campus community of 40,000 students, staff, and faculty.  The daily events focus on many pathways to reduce individual environmental impacts – energy conservation, local food, alternative transportation (walking, public transit, bikes, etc.), recycling, and water.  Other events focus on economic and social justice initiatives and programs happening around the UIC campus. See a short list here.

  • Check out our interactive Earth Month Calendar. Click on the title of each event to learn more! Take a photo of yourself at the events using #UICEarthMonth @Sustainable UIC to be entered into the EcoJam! raffle. The more events you go to, the more chances you have to win!

Did you know April is also Asian American Awareness Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month? See more information at the Asian American Resource Center and the Campus Advocacy Network.

How do I fill out my punchcard?

All you have to do is visit 5 tables (from 5 different color categories) and have the folks behind the table validate it. Easy!

    What do the colors mean?

Each color represents a different aspect of sustainability: Nature & Environment, Health & Wellness, Economy, Education Culture & Social Justice, and Transportation. These categories come from the What Color is Your Sustainability Quiz.

    Personal Electronic Recycling Collection

UIC has partnered with Zeta Psi, Vet Tech, and Zipcar to make recycling your personal electronics a breeze! Simply bring in your old and broken cell phones, mp3 players, laptops, super magic diaries, heck… anything that accept batteries or has a plug (except TV’s) to the Zeta Psi recycling booth in SCE and show Zipcar you recycled and they will give you FREE driving credit! Pretty cool, huh?

    Why celebrate Earth Day?

Because we are grateful to drink uncontaminated water and breather clean air! Read more about the very first Earth Day, April 22, 1970.

What is Bike 2 Campus Week?

Bike2Campus is part challenge, part competition. The point is to get as many students riding as many bikes as possible! We will be competing against other Chicagoland schools and this year, we want to win! Last year, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago won and we won’t stand for it this year!

    You gotta help UIC win!

The more you ride, the more you help UIC’s chances. Also, the more you ride, the more chances you get to winning awesome prizes!

    How can I participate?

    How can I participate?

    1) RIDE

Ride your bike from home to UIC, or ride your bike around UIC, or just ride your bike around town. Either way, RIDE YOUR BIKE! Throughout the week, UIC will host safe, fun and engaging bicycle events around campus to help you get on that bike.

    2) RECORD

Let us know how much you rode. Go to bike2campus.com and select UIC, provide your contact information, and enter in the number of rides each day. (A “ride” can be from Rogers Park to UIC, or maybe just from SCE to SCW. We want to know how many times you got on that bike!)

    3) REWARD

There are 4 ways to earn perks:

    1. pedal. Ride your bike as many times as you can this week. The top 3 bikers who log the most trips will win annual DIVVY memberships!
    2. pass the Illinois Bicycle Safety Quiz @ bikesafetyquiz.com.
Bring your quiz completion certificate to the BAM table at  EcoJam April 22 and receive voucher for FREE Chipotle Burrito card, a FREE Pret lunch card or $10 Tropical Smoothie card! (while supplies last)
