The Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium created a document with over 60 job listing sites and career pathways sites to assist faculty, students and career advisors. To the right of your screen, you will see postings for on and off-campus internships that are updated monthly. Below is a description of the Office of Sustainability’s new and exciting internship program.
Sustainability Internship Program (SIP)
This internship program is a new initiative through the Office of Sustainability that offers hands-on learning experiences for undergraduates that advance the overall mission of greater social, economic and environmental sustainability in the campus community. This unique program provides and intellectual framework for students to apply classroom learning to project based engagement. We are piloting this program for Summer 2014. The internships are for 15 hrs/week for 10 weeks with the potential to continue during the 2014-2015 academic year.
The program consists of:
- internship placement at a UIC department
- weekly seminars and field outings that cover a range of educational and skill building topics
- leadership development and project management experience
Seminar topics include: environmental and energy sustainability issues, cultural sustainability issues, institutional challenges and change management, campus structure and administration, campus sustainability programs and job readiness.
The internship opportunities include paid, academic credit and volunteer-based internships. The placements include academic colleges, UIC Dining Services, UIC Campus Housing, Tree Campus, Bike UIC and various internships with the Office of Sustainability.
As part of the SIP program interns will:
- Develop a work plan and project goals
- Meet frequently with project supervisor
- Share experiences with SIP cohort
- Attend weekly seminars and outings
- Report on campus sustainability using the SIP blog
- Present project results at a poster presentation
